Siargao Airport Starts Expansion to Support Tourism Growth

Siargao is getting more popular every year. It is known for its white sand beaches, surfing spots, and relaxing vibe. Tourists from the Philippines and other countries love visiting the island. But there's one problem. The airport is too small for the growing number of travelers.

Right now, the terminal can only handle around 200 people at once. That leads to long lines, tight waiting areas, and delayed flights. Many travelers have complained about the crowding and lack of space.

To solve this, the government has started expanding the Siargao Airport. On August 8, 2025, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon visited the site to lead the start of construction. This project follows the goal of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to make travel more comfortable and reliable across the country.

According to the Department of Tourism, the expansion will double the size of the terminal and increase capacity from 200 to 750 passengers at any given time. That’s almost four times more people than it can currently handle.

According to a report from the Philippine News Agency, the airport will be designed to give a smoother, cleaner, and more comfortable experience. It will include better seating areas, more check-in counters, and wider spaces for baggage and boarding.

This is not just about comfort. It also brings real benefits to the local economy. As more flights arrive, more visitors will come. This means more business for local hotels, tricycle drivers, food stalls, souvenir shops, and tour guides. People in Siargao will have more ways to earn and grow.

A news article from GMA also said the project is part of a bigger tourism push by the national government. Other airports are also being upgraded, but Siargao is a priority because of how fast its tourism industry is growing.

Secretary Frasco said the goal is simple. Make travel easier for visitors and bring more jobs to Filipinos. A better airport will help people enjoy the beauty of Siargao without the stress of a crowded terminal.

The construction will take time, but the benefits will last much longer. When finished, the new Siargao Airport will be ready to welcome more guests with comfort and care.
