Siargao is facing real challenges. Rising tourist arrivals bring more solid waste, higher demand for resources, and greater exposure to climate risks such as flooding and coastal erosion. To respond, two projects are introducing strategies aimed at building a greener and more sustainable island economy.
DOST’s Green Wave Project
Earlier this September 2025, the Department of Science and Technology Caraga organized a two-day activity in Del Carmen under Project Green Wave. The event highlighted how science and technology can contribute to a circular economy on the island. The project presented practical solutions, including composting systems to reduce organic waste, wastewater treatment to protect water sources, and clean transport concepts such as rapid EV charging stations and an electric boat designed for coastal travel. By presenting these options, DOST showed how innovative approaches could support both environmental protection and community needs if local participation grows.
Action Against Hunger’s Green Economy Project
At the same time, Action Against Hunger, with funding support from the Spanish development agency AECID, is leading the Siargao Green Economy Project in the municipalities of General Luna, San Isidro, Del Carmen, and Burgos. The project’s focus is on solid waste management. It involves setting up material recovery facilities, promoting recycling practices, and encouraging the use of alternatives to single-use plastics. The initiative also works with local communities to transform waste into potential livelihood opportunities. Beyond waste solutions, the project integrates climate awareness campaigns, promotes gender equality in community participation, and strengthens local governance to ensure that sustainability efforts are inclusive and long-term.
One Shared Goal
Although they operate through different methods, both projects move toward the same objective: reducing waste, building resilient communities, and securing a greener future for Siargao. Together, they represent a shift toward sustainable practices that aim to balance environmental conservation with economic growth on the island.
