Many Siargaonons have quietly raised concerns about corruption for years. Now, Christophe Bariou, a longtime resident and entrepreneur, and the partner of Filipino actress Nadine Lustre, is speaking up, urging national agencies to look into what he calls a long-standing pattern of political greed and mismanagement.
Allegations of Corruption and Local Mismanagement
In a report by Bilyonaryo, Bariou urged the Department of Public Works and Highways and other national offices to review local operations he claims have stalled development and discouraged honest business. He described a pattern of harassment, delayed projects, and misuse of public funds that, he said, has hurt the island’s growth.
He also confirmed filing complaints with the Office of the Ombudsman and the Anti-Red Tape Authority, citing repeated incidents of intimidation and an alleged fifty-million-peso extortion attempt.
Impact on Siargao’s Development and Community Trust
His statement divided public opinion on the island. Some locals see it as a needed step toward transparency, while others question his motives, pointing to earlier reports about his own projects facing regulatory scrutiny.
Still, Bariou’s words have revived an old concern among residents: how much longer will Siargao’s progress be held back by politics and corruption?
As debates continue, one question remains. Can the island move forward without losing the trust of its people?
