On the morning of October 17, 2025, at approximately 7:03 AM local time, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Siargao Island in the Philippine Sea. The epicenter was located about 14 kilometers southeast of General Luna, at a depth of 59 kilometers.
The tremor was felt across Siargao, including popular areas like General Luna and Union. Buildings shook, but there have been no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties. Local authorities urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks.
In response, the Department of Tourism confirmed that all tourists on Siargao Island remained safe. Local government units in Caraga Region, including Surigao del Norte, suspended work and classes in public and private offices as a precautionary measure.
CCTV footage from a restaurant in General Luna captured the moment the earthquake struck, with staff quickly evacuating to safety. While the incident caused temporary panic, no injuries were reported.
