Siargao’s Coconut Farmers Turn To Smarter, Sustainable Practices

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the coconut sector in Siargao and other parts of the Philippines is entering a new phase of innovation through artificial intelligence and circular economy systems. The program aims to raise farmers’ incomes and reduce agricultural waste while promoting sustainable rural industries.

Shifting From Copra To High-Value Coconut Products

For decades, Siargao’s coconut farmers have relied on copra production, a trade known for low prices and unstable demand. The ILO’s project, supported by local partners and digital innovators, helps farmers process coconuts into value-added products such as virgin coconut oil, flour, syrup, and activated carbon.

According to the ILO report, these new methods combine data-driven monitoring, efficient processing, and better waste management. The approach allows smallholders to use every part of the coconut, creating more income while minimizing environmental impact.

A Smarter And Greener Coconut Economy

The circular model links technology, tourism, and agriculture. Resorts and food businesses that source locally processed coconut products help drive a community-based economy. Artificial intelligence tools are also being tested to map farms, track production, and support transparent supply chains.

The ILO describes this as a blueprint for inclusive, sustainable growth. It shows how traditional farming in island communities like Siargao can adapt to global shifts in green business and smart agriculture.
